MIKE SMITH WINS TWO IN A ROW IN THE IMCA MODIFIED DIVISION AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY.

 

KIRKWOOD, NY…Mike Smith backed up his opening night victory at Five Mile Point Speedway with a second consecutive IMCA Modified victory on Saturday night.  Justin Holland was the Sportsman victor with Butch Green copping Pure Stock honors.  The Lightning Cat wins went to Kenny Underwood (expert) and Shaun Colwell (novice).  The Modified feature was postponed due to curfew and will be made up on Saturday, June 6th. 

 

The 20 lap IMCA Modified feature event saw Steve Simpson and Gary Roberts on the front row for the start.  Roberts jumped out to the early lead with Mike Smith wasting no time advancing from his ninth starting position.  Roberts, the two-time defending track champion quickly had to contend with Smith who was dialed in on the extreme outside of the speedway.  It didn’t take long for Smith to take the point as he motored around the outside of Roberts on lap number 5.  Smith would go on to lead the remainder of the way for his second consecutive victory.  Roberts was involved in a lap 11 jingle that would end his night while running third.  Mike Stoddard, Mike Wilmot, Tyler Stoddard and Cliff Pierce made up the top five finishers.

 

Justin Holland started on the pole of the 20 lap Sportsman feature event and made easy work of the field as he led wire to wire for his first 2009 FMP victory.  Eight cautions slowed the event that was originally scheduled for 25 laps but caught back due to time restrictions.  Following Holland across the line were Chris Wood, Butch Klinger, Brian Decker and Dwayne Robbins.

 

Butch Green pulled off a remarkable feat in the scheduled 25 lap Pure Stock feature event.  Green started in the eighth position at the drop of the green and was able to take the lead on lap 2.  Green split a four wide pack to take advantage on the second circuit.  For Green the move paid off as nine cautions slowed the pace along with one red flag.  The race was called complete on lap 18 due to time restrictions on each feature.  The most serious incident in the event came on lap 4 when T.J. Anderson broke a right rear wheel causing him to flip in turn one.  Anderson landed on all four wheels and was unshaken in the incident.  At the finish Green would be followed across the line by Jonathon Carpenter, Charlie Gilbert, Steve Polhamus and Mike Codington.

 

Carl Nagel led wire to wire in the Modified Guaranteed Starters race.  The event started the evening off with a 15 lap race which awarded two guaranteed starting spots to the feature event.  The non-qualified Modified teams from the week prior were in this event.  Nagel and Matt Latwinski advanced to the feature with Tim Votra earning a $100 Hard Charger bonus and 5 gallons of Sunoco Race Fuel from MNR Race Fuels and Doug Speed Shop.  Carl Nagel also was awarded with a set of racking jack stands courtesy of French’s Auto Parts.

 

Kenny Underwood won the Lightning Cat Expert feature event and Shaun Colwell was the Lightning Cat Novice winner.  Mark Andrus won his second consecutive Figure 8 feature event.

 

Race notes…Heavy rains swept in to the southern tier after 150 plus race teams had already signed in…The decision was made to make every attempt to run the event with all of the teams already in attendance…Racing began roughly an hour and a half after the scheduled starting time as track crews worked the track for racing…The Modified and Lightning Cat regular scheduled features were postponed due to the Town of Kirkwood curfew…The Lightning Cat features will be made up this Sunday, May 17th…The Modified feature event will be made up on Saturday, June 6th…Racing continues this Sunday, May 17th with the CRSA Sprint Cars, Race of Champions Dart Dirt Pure Stock Tour and point races for the Sportsman, IMCA Modifieds, Lighting Cats and  A League of Their Own…Racing starts at 5 p.m.
