STEWART FRIESEN BECOMES SIXTH DIFFERENT MODIFIED WINNER IN SEVEN RACES AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY.

KIRKWOOD, NY…The ultra competitive 2009 race season continued it’s trend on Saturday night as Stewart Friesen from Niagara on the Lake, Ontario became the sixth different Modified winner in seven races this season.   Joey Colsten became the first repeat winner of the season in Sportsman division.  There have been seven different feature winners in eight races this season in the Sportsman class.

Brett Barrett darted out to the initial lead in the 30 lap feature event on Saturday night.  Barrett looked strong early as he ran the outside of the speedway with Glenn Knapp in tow.  A caution on lap 4 bunched up the field and Knapp took advantage of his outside restart position to motor in to the lead.  Tom Votra was quickly advancing from his fifth starting slot as he moved in to second on lap 8.  Votra quickly began to pressure Knapp on the outside of the speedway and took over the point on the 11th circuit.

Votra looked like the guy to beat as he was dialed in on the outer edges of the quarter mile.  Meanwhile, Stewart Friesen was beginning to quietly advance from his thirteenth starting spot.  Friesen worked in to second on lap 13 and immediately applied the heat to Votra.  On lap 15 Friesen drifted in front of Votra to take the lead but the caution came out and Votra regained his lead position.  On the restart Friesen made his inside move stick as he took over the lead on the next circuit.

All eyes were now on the battle for third between Vinny DeCicco, Glenn Knapp, Mike Colsten and Brian Weaver.  DeCicco made his way past Votra on lap 26 and quickly set his sights on Knapp for second.  With only two laps to go DeCicco made his way past Knapp but did not have enough time to reel in Friesen.  Knapp held on for third with Colsten and Weaver rounding out the top five. The speedway surface was outstanding on Saturday as DeCicco came from the 10th starting position, fourth place finisher Colsten came out of the consolation event and had started twenty-fourth on the field.

Modified race notes…The 30 lap Modified feature event saw four different race leaders through the event but it was Marathons Tim Votra and Stewart Friesen that put on the best battle for the lead.  Votra took the lead on lap 11 from Johnson City’s Glenn Knapp.  Votra and Friesen battled for almost a dozen laps as Votra ran the very outside of the speedway and Friesen ran the inside line.  On a lap 21 restart Friesen was able to make his winning pass.  Votra had to contend with a strong battle for second and would eventually fade to finish sixth in the final stages.  Vinny DeCicco made his fourth career Five Mile Point Speedway and start and finished second.  Knapp wound up third with

Joey Colsten became the first repeat winner of 2009 in the Sportsman division.  Colsten took the lead on lap four and never looked back in the 20 lap feature event.  His previous victory came on Saturday, May 17th.  Mike Nagel, Jr. had another solid runner-up finish followed by Charlie Hendrickson, Jr., Chris Wood and Jerry Tonti.

Charlie Gilbert took the lead on lap 16 of the 20 lap Pure Stock feature event and held off a late race charge by Butch Green to collect his third win of the season.  Gilbert started 11th in the twenty-four car starting field.  Harold Humphrey tallied another podium finish in third with Jonathon Carpenter and Tom Eiklor completing the top five slots.

Two-time defending IMCA Modified Track Champion Gary Roberts looked like he might be on to his second feature victory of the season on Saturday.  Roberts has had terrible luck this season and took command of the 20 lapper early.  Scott Bennett had to work his way through the field from his eighth starting spot and on lap 11 he pulled in to second place.  On lap 13 Bennett was able to work past Roberts for the lead and he would never look back.  Bennett would go on for his first victory of the season.  Roberts wound up second followed by Cliff Pierce, Tyler Stoddard and Mike Wilmot.

Other feature winners on Saturday night were Cody Decker in the Lightning Cat Expert class,  Shaun Colwell in the Lightning Cat Novice class and Bryan Batzel in the Kiddie Cat division.
