BRIAN WEAVER BECOMES FIRST REPEAT MODIFIED WINNER IN HELDOVER FEATURE AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY.  BOBBY PUCKETT CAPTURES THE NIGHTCAP AND EARNS A KING OF THE CATSKILLS GUARANTEED STARTING SPOT.

 

Kirkwood, NY…Brian Weaver from Windsor, NY became the first repeat winner of 2009 in the Modified division on Saturday night at Five Mile Point Speedway.  Weaver started on the pole in the held over Modified feature and led the entire distance.  Thirty-nine Modifieds were on hand for the night of double features. 

 

Weaver led the entire distance but the victory was not easy.  The early stages of the race Weaver and Jim Gabriel, Jr. ran side by side for the lead.  Weaver ran the bottom of the speedway while Gabriel kept pace on the outside line.  On lap 9 Gabriel slowed with a flat tire and had to head to the pits.  Weaver would go the distance without any serious challenge.  Stewart Friesen rallied late to finish second with Mike Colsten, last weeks winner Eric Palmer and rookie Shaun Walker completing the top five.

 

In the regular scheduled Modified feature event Bobby Puckett from Old Forge, PA took the lead on lap 13 and held off late race charges from Canadian driver Stewart Friesen to record his first victory of the season.  Puckett became the fifth different Modified feature winner in six events.  Friesen wound up in second place for the second time on Saturday.  Jim Gabriel, Jr., Brent Wilcox and Mike Colsten recorded his second top five finish of the night.  For Puckett the win earned him a guaranteed starting spot in the King of the Catskills event at Accord Speedway in September.

 

Brian Decker took the lead on lap 3 of the Sportsman feature event and went on to record his first win of the 2009 season.  Decker, from Susquehanna, PA became the seventh different winner in seven races in the class this season. Jamie Batzel, Mike Nagel Jr., Brian Puckett and Joey Colsten completed the top five. 

 

Joe Cole from Johnson City, NY led wire to wire in the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature event.  For Cole it was his first 2009 victory as well. Scott Bennett, Mike Wilmot, Mike Stoddard and Cliff Pierce completed the top five.

 

Harold Humphrey recorded his first victory of the season in the 20 lap Pure Stock feature event.  Humphrey took the lead on lap 14 and held off Charlie Gilbert for the win.  Gilbert wound up second followed by Shane Wolf, Mike Codington and Steve Polhamus.

 

Racing continues this Saturday night at 5 p.m. with the annual “Pack the Track” Night presented by Don’s Automotive Mall.  Grandstand admission is only 1 dollar!
