AREA RACE FANS SHOW GENEROSITY IN FOOD
BANK CHALLENGE AT FIVE MILE
The
big evening of racing brought out another big crowd to the historic quarter
mile oval on Saturday night. Upon
entering the speedway area race fans showed once again why they are some of the
most charitable people in sports. Food
donation barrels were set up near the speedway entrance’s on Saturday
night along with scales to weigh the non-perishable food items that were
collected.
A
number of area business’s committed pledges of cash donations per pound
of food collected (up to 1,000 lbs.).
When the final tally was in over 1,300 lbs of non-perishable food items
had been donated by the great fans at Five Mile Point Speedway.
Five Mile Point Speedway committed $1 per
every pound raised up to 1,000 lbs. The
speedway will donate $1,000 to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. M.A. Bordeau, Inc.
will donate $500 and both Don’s Automotive Mall and Schneider’s
Market will match that $500 donation.
French’s Auto Parts will donate $300 and Bimbo Bakeries (Friehoffer foods) will donate $250. Papa John’s Pizza and A.L. George, Inc.
will each donate $200 based on their 20 cent per pound commitment. A grand total of $3,500 was raised to benefit
the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. This
total includes a $50 donation check that was provided by one of the Five Mile
Point Speedway spectators.
Five
Mile Point Speedway owner Andrew Harpell commented, “We are extremely
pleased to have exceeded our goal of 1,000 lbs. of non-perishable food
items.” “Once again the
great fans of our speedway stepped up to help out a great cause and along with
the tremendous cash support of the business’s involved we certainly did
what we had set out to accomplish.”
The
speedway is in the midst of its 60th consecutive year of racing and
over the year’s the local community has benefited tremendously from the
number of charitable events held at the facility. Each summer hundreds of free tickets and
merchandise are provided to area benefits and fund raisers. In December the speedway will be working on a
fund raiser to help benefit “Toys for Tots”. More information will be coming in the near
future.
Racing
continues this Saturday, August 21st with the World Figure 8
Championship event. The CRSA Sprint Cars
will make their final appearance of the 2010 season at the speedway. For more information please phone
