STEWART FRIESEN LOCKS UP FIRST FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP WITH VICTORY IN SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP 50.

KIRKWOOD, NYStewart Friesen wrapped up an outstanding regular season at Five Mile Point Speedway by recording his tenth feature win in the 50 lap Season Championship event.  The victory in the 50 lapper netted him $2,500 but more importantly locked up the 2010 Track Championship which is worth $6,000 more.

For Friesen, the 2010 Five Mile Point Speedway racing season will be a memorable one.  His 60th Anniversary Track Championship also vaulted him into a second place tie with Craig VonDohren in the final American Racer East Coast Modified Cup Point Standings.  That accomplishment netted him $4,250 along with ten free American Racer tires for his FMP title.  Friesen was also voted one of the top 60 Five Mile Point Speedway all-time drivers earlier in the season.

Entering the Season Championship Modified 50 lapper the title had not been decided but Friesen would leave little doubt by recording the win.  Joe Krisovich and Barry White led the field to the green flag for the start of the 50 lapper but it would be Friesen that would bring out the first yellow after a lap 1 jingle that sent him to the pits with a flat tire.  He would rejoin the field in the 26th starting spot.  On the restart White hustled out in to the lead as Gary Griffin charged from his fifth starting spot to settle in to the runner-up slot.  White led the first 18 circuits but the yellow would fly on that lap for a spinning Frank Yankowski.  On the restart Griffin powered past White and into the lead.  By the mid-way point of the race Friesen had rallied all the way back in to the top five.  At this point Griffin held the point over Nick Rochinski, Shaun Walker, White and Friesen.

It wouldn’t take Friesen long to close in on Griffin for the race lead as the two began to battle on lap 29.  On lap 31 Friesen went to the extreme outside and made his move past Griffin.  Friesen would go the remainder of the way without being seriously challenged.  Griffin held on for a fine second place finish followed by Walker and a late charging Mike Ricci.  Nick Rochinski held on for fifth.  The quarter mile surface was once again dialed in to perfection as Friesen charged from 26th for the win.  Walker started 19th and finished third.  Ricci started 23rd and finished fourth.

Entering the evening the closest point battle was in the Sportsman division.  Justin Holland had only a one point lead over Chris Wood with Mike Loney only four points behind.  The 25 lap feature event was dominated by Brian Decker as he took the lead on lap 5 and never looked back.  All eyes were on the battle between Holland, Wood and Loney.  During the course of the race Holland maintained close to Loney and Wood knowing what he had to do to win the track championship.  All of that would change after a lap 21 caution.  On the restart Holland drifted and bounced off the turn two wall costing him a number of track positions.  He ultimately would not recover as Mike Loney went on to finish third in the race and collect his first Five Mile Point Track Championship.  For Loney the title was even more impressive as he never won a feature but had consistent finishes all season long.  Decker went on for the 25 lap race victory with Jeff Crambo, Loney, Jerry Tonti and Nick Petrilak rounding out the top five.

Mike Smith did just enough with an eighth place finish to lock up his first IMCA Modified Track Championship at the quarter mile.  Howard Jones led from lap 2 until the end of the 25 lapper for his third feature win of the season.  Brad Weaver, Scott Bennett, Mike Wilmot and Patti Simpson rounded out the top five.

Charlie Gilbert had locked up the Street Stock Track Championship prior to the Season Championship 25 lap event.  Gilbert started on the outside pole of the main event but it would be Darl Ellis, Jr. taking command on lap 2 and never looking back.  Ellis would go on for his second victory of the season.  Tyler Yeagle, Rich Sharpsteen and Lanson Albanese completed the top five.

Nick Griest took the lead frm Dave Simmson lap 4 and led the remainder of the way for the Lightning Cat Expert Season Championship victory.  Dan Wood limped to a seventh place finish after an early race jingle but still managed to hang on for the 2010 Track Championship in the class.  Duane Kinne earned his eighth victory of the season and in the meantime locked up the 2010 Lightning Cat Novice Track Championship. Laurie Fallis won the early evening A League of Their Own race and Track Championship and then loaded up and drove to Glen Ridge Speedway to try and win a track title their on the same night.
