SOUTHERN TIER OPEN TO JOEY GRAMMES.

EDDIE WHITE, MIKE WILMOT, BRENTON MILLER, ISIAH FORWARD, DAVE RAUSCHMEIER COLLECT OPENING NIGHT POINT VICTORIES…

KIRKWOOD, NY…On Saturday Joey Grammes collected the victory in the Southern Tier Open at Five Mile Point Speedway.  The win netted him $2,500 in the 40 lap event.  It was his second victory in the 21st edition of the event, with his prior win coming in 2007.

Eddie White started off the point season for the Sportsman in fine fashion by collecting the top honors in the 20 lap main event.  Brenton Miller started off the point season in the Street Stocks with the victory and Mike Wilmot picked off where he left off in 2013 by winning the IMCA Modified point opener. Wilmot, is the defending IMCA Modified Track Champion.  Isiah Forward and Dave Rauschmeier were Lightning Cat Winners.

The 40 lap Southern Tier Open found Joey Colsten and Mike Ricci setting the pace for the start.  Colsten quickly moved out front as Ricci settled in to the second slot.  Mike Colsten ran in third during the early stages as Grammes quickly began his march from the fifth starting slot.  The caution would fall on lap 6 and on the restart Grammes would already be up to second for the restart with Joey Colsten leading.  Grammes powered past on the restart as now Ricci hustled in to second place.

The top two tried to check away from the field as the caution would fly again on the 12th circuit for a multi car tangle with Brian Malcolm, Donnie Lawson, Barry White, Chris Ostrowsky, and Danny Creeden.  Everyone was able to pull away from the skirmish and when the green flew again Grammes took command.

Chad Phelps began to make his march toward the front after starting in the ninth position as he broke in to the top five on the restart. Up front Grammes, Ricci and now Mike Colsten began to pull away from the field.  Unfortunately for Ricci a right rear tire went down on lap 24 brining out the next caution.  The top five at this point was now Grammes, Mike Colsten, Brian Weaver, Phelps and Danny Tyler.

The final 16 laps would go caution free as Grammes went virtually unchallenged the remainder of the way.  Colsten and Weaver had a classic battle for second over the final circuits with Jackie Brown and Nick Petrilak racing hard just outside of the top five.  At the checkered it would be Grammes, Colsten, Weaver, Tyler and Phelps coming across as the top five.  Tyler was one of the fastest cars on the track during the late stages but the long green flag run allowed the front runners to pull away before he could start to regain momentum.  His streak of solid Southern Tier Open finishes continued with no worse than a fourth place finish in four straight years of this event.

In victory lane Grammes commented, “We love coming here and we knew we had the car to beat tonight so the key was to get out front early and just drive our race.”  He added, “I knew we had some good guys behind us and just wanted to stay clean and let them battle it out.”

Eddie White led wire to wire in the 20 lap Sportsman feature event.  Although he led the duration it was no easy feat as he battled with his team mates Kenny Hammond and Brian White throughout the race.  Randy Green looked strong as he ran with the leaders the entire event as well. The race was slowed by only two cautions for slowing cars.  For Eddie White it was a happy return to victory lane after a recent serious leg injury during a logging incident.  He remarked, “Getting in and out of the car is a little tougher than normal but once I got in a groove it felt great being out front.”  The top five finishers would be White, Hammond, Brian White, Green and Larry Hillis.  Hillis had a great run after starting in tenth and battling his own leg troubles.  A recent knee surgery has Hillis in the middle of rehabbing.  On Saturday it certainly didn’t slow him down.

For the second consecutive Saturday the Street Stocks would put on a thriller in the 20 lap feature event.  Brenton Miller raced out in to the early lead with Matt Roberts working past on lap 6.  Roberts would lead until Miller snuck past again on lap 16.  The two engaged in a great battle for the lead very reminiscent of the week prior when Roberts and Shane Wolf battled for the win.  At the finish Miller would hang on for the victory with Roberts finishing second for the second straight week.  Daryl Krebs had a great run for third with Tom Savercool and Eric Boynton rounding out the top five.

The IMCA Modified 20 lap feature event saw another great battle for the win between Mike Wilmot and Gary Roberts.  The two picked up where they left off in 2013 as Wilmot won the title and Roberts was a close third in the standings.  Wilmot took the lead from the start but Roberts quickly challenged.  The two ran side by side for nearly the entire twenty lap feature with Roberts working past on the final lap down the backstretch.  As the duo entered turn three Wilmot slipped back underneath Roberts and just edged him out for the outstanding finish and win.  Roberts finished second with Jake Maynard having a strong run in third.  Jared Spalding and Tanner Harpell rounded out the top five.

A pair of Lightning Cat feature wins went to Isiah Forward (Experts) and Dave Rauschmeier (Novice).  Both were first time winners at the speedway.

Racing continues this Saturday night at 6 p.m. with the Official 64th Season Opener for Modifieds.  The 30 lap event will start the championship point race and pay $2,000 to win.  The Sportsman, IMCA Modfieds, Street Stocks, Lightning Cats, Figure 8’s and Factory Stocks will be on the card.
