FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RE: SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT

ANTHONY PERREGO WINS THE BATTLE, MIKE COLSTEN WINS THE WAR.  PERREGO 50 LAP SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP RACE WINNER.  MIKE COLSTEN CAPTURES SECOND STRAIGHT TRACK TITLE.

KIRKWOOD, NY…This past Saturday was Season Championship night at Five Mile Point Speedway.  All of the track point titles were up for grabs.  In the Modified division Anthony Perrego showed his season dominance by winning his seventh feature event.  The victory was worth $2,000 in the 50 lapper.  Mike Colsten showed his persistence as he recorded his second straight Track Championship.

Rusty Smith and Glenn Knapp led the Modified field down to the green for the 50 lap feature events.  Pre race excitement was high as four drivers had a shot at the 2014 Track Championship.  A couple of early race scrambles almost immediately changed the players in the championship.  A lap 1 tangle on the backstretch led to a several car incident in turn 3.  Steve Babicek slammed the turn 3 wall ending his night.  Mike Colsten ended up off the ground when Ric Hill collected him and almost wound up in the wall.  Hill had to pit and came back several laps down.  Colsten was able to continue.

When things settled down Rusty Smith set a strong pace out front with Perrego quickly emerging from his fifth starting spot.  On lap 8 Perrego made his way past Smith but Smith quickly rallied to recapture the point on the next lap.  On Lap 10 Perrego worked back past for the lead, one he would not relinquish. The caution flew on lap 14 as Smith saw his great early run end with a flat tire.  This moved one of the title contenders Brian Weaver in to second place.  Entering the night Tyler Siri had a mathematical chance of winning the title but that ended with Colsten and Nick Petrilak took the green in the feature.  Siri was now up to third with Colsten all the way back up to fifth by the lap 14 caution after restarting in 19th on lap 1.  Petrilak was up to 7th after starting 9th and Colsten was placed back to sixth on the restart after contact with his son earlier in the race.

On the green Colsten quickly continued his advance to the front as Siri worked past Weaver up front for second place.  Petrilak got wide in turn four and lost several spots dropping back to 12th place making his title hopes much more unlikely.  The race would remain caution free as another long green flag run allowed the field to spread out.  On lap 31 the caution came out for the final time.  At this point Perrego was still in command with Siri in second.  Colsten had worked up to third with Weaver fourth and Jeff Crambo in fifth.  Petrilak had rallied back to 7th with the other title contender Chris Wood now 11th.  On the restart Weaver slipped past Costen for third place as the top two tried to leave the field.  Petrilak had found the outside of the speedway to his liking but had to contend with Joey Colsten who had an ill handling car after the early race tangle.  Petrilak tried for several laps and eventually worked past on lap 41 making his way in to the top five.  With the race continuing caution free Petrilak ran out of time in trying to chase down the leaders.  Perrego went on for his seventh feature win of the season and locked up the track American Racer Cup Title.  Siri had another strong run finishing second with Weaver completing a solid season with a third place finish.  Mike Colsten was fourth which was enough to lock up his second straight Modified Track Championship.  Petrilak wound up fifth enough to maintain his second place standing in the final points, an outstanding accomplishment for the Modified rookie.  With his victory Perrego wound up fifth in the final point standings which for the first time in recent history saw two Modified rookies in the final top five of the standings.  Siri, a rookie at Five Mile Point Speedway but not a Modified rookie also wound up in the top five in the final standings.

Brian White left no doubt in his title hopes in the Sportsman division on Saturday.  White started 7th and took the lead on lap 5 from Randy Green to go on to his 7th feature win of the season in a very competitive division.  His team mates Kenny Hammond and his dad Eddie White entered the evening with title opportunities.  Brian White left no doubt with the victory.  Kenny Hammond rallied from a slow start in the 20 lapper to finish second.  Eddie White was caught up in an early race tangle and came back from the rear to finish 7th.  Green had another great run to finish third in the feature with Brad Szulewski finishing fourth.  Sportsman rookie Ryan Higgs had his best career finish with a fifth.  Mike Wilmot, another Sportsman rookie was able to secure his place in the final top five in points with a 13th place race finish.

Like White in the Sportsman feature event Matt Cole left nothing to chance in his IMCA Modified title hopes by winning the 20 lap Season Championship event.  Tanner Harpell entered the night as the point leader but Cole’s second victory of the season combined with Harpell dropping out on lap 15 with mechanical issues secured the title.  Mike Stoddard jumped out to the early lead in the 20 lapper and was hoping for his second straight victory.  On lap 15 Stoddard spun out while leading and Cole took over from there leading the remainder of the event and recording the win.  Jake Maynard finished second followed by K.C. Cole, Kurt Decker and Tim Vandemark.  For Cole the championship was especially meaningful as a third generation driver at the speedway.

In the 20 lap Street Stock Season Championship event Shane Wolf, Jr. drove to his fourth feature win of the season but it would be Randy Fox that locked up the 2014 Track Championship.  Fox collected three feature wins and his fourth place finish on Saturday was enough to record his first ever track championship in only his second year of racing.  Wolf led wire to wire.

Other Season Championship race winners were:  Will Eastman (600 c.c. Modifieds), Andy Brigham (Lightning Cat Experts), Jessey Torrens (Lighting Cat Novice), Mike Morse (Factory Stocks and Figure 8’s).  Track Championships in those classes were secured by Will Eastman, Adam Gilbert (Lightning Cat Experts), Ronnie Welch (Lightning Cat Novice) and Mark Andrus (Figure 8).
