Re: 61st 5 Mile Point Opener
61st Season of Racing Set to
KIRKWOOD, NY…The 61st consecutive year of racing at Five Mile Point Speedway is quickly coming together as the staff of the quarter mile are working hard to put together one of the most impressive schedules in recent years. The first event of 2011 will take place on Sunday, April 10th with the RoC Dirt Sportsman Tour competing in a special $1,500 to win event. The RoC Street Stocks, 600 c.c. Modifieds will be in action along with a Four Cylinder Open. Racing will get underway at 4:00 p.m.
The season will get underway with two practice sessions on Saturday, April 2nd and Saturday, April 9th. Those practice sessions will be open to any division competing at the speedway in 2011. As in the past grandstand admission will be free with the donation of a canned good to benefit area food pantries. Ride alongs will be available in the Five Mile Point Speedway Two Seater Modified as well.
On Sunday, April 10th the Sportsman will take center stage with a RoC Dirt Tour race, RoC Street Stock Tour race, 600 c.c. Modifieds and Four Cylinder Open. Last year Nick Rochinski bested a stellar field of the top Sportsman teams for the victory in the RoC Sportsman event.
The action certainly will not slow down as the Annual Southern Tier Open will take center stage six days later on Saturday, April 16th. The open event will allow sail panels on the Modifieds along with open tires. The race winner will earn $2,500. Last year Pat Ward took the top honors over Mike Bowman, Brian Weaver, Stewart Friesen and Brian Malcolm. Friesen rallied late in the event from his 20th starting position on what would ultimately turn in to a dream season. For Ward it was his first victory in the Southern Tier Open.
Saturday, April 16th will also serve as the 2011 point openers for the Sportsman, Street Stocks, IMCA Modifieds and Lightning Cats. Racing will get underway at 6 p.m.
The speedway will host another open practice on Saturday, April 23rd. Once again Two Seat Modified rides will be available to the race fans in attendance. This date will also serve as the rain date for the Southern Tier Open if needed.
Saturday, April 30th will wrap up the month of April in fine fashion as the Modifieds will compete in the official 61st season opener. The 30 lap event will serve as the first point race of the season and will pay $2,000 to the winner. The Figure 8 teams will also start their 2011 point battle on this night along with complete shows for the Sportsman, Street Stocks, IMCA Modifieds and Lightning Cats.
