KIRKWOOD, NY...Major renovations are currently under way at Five Mile Point Speedway as preparations continue for the first of two practice days scheduled for Saturday, April 24th and May 1st. The 54th Annual Season opener will take place on Saturday, May 8th with a 50 lapper for the Big Block/Small Block Modifieds.
The racing facility has been totally revamped as the anticipation level continues to grow leading up to the 54th season of racing at the Point. The infield guardrail retaining wall has been totally removed with a new concrete barrier system being put in place in the days to come. The racing surface has been totally ripped up with new material already being blended into the old surface.
Additional work has taken place over the embankments of the speedway providing drivers a smooth transitional run off area should they exit the speedway. An added amount of fill has also been used to provide a safe retainer over the embankment. The entire infield hub has been shaved down for a smooth transition off the racetrack along with a reshaping of the drainage areas off the speedway.
More tons of clay will be trucked onto the speedway over the next two weeks with all "on track" improvements expected to be completed by April 17th. "We want to utilize the week leading up to the first practice day to just continually work the surface we've added in," commented track operator Andrew Harpell. He added, "With the new material already in place the track is currently ready for racing, should it rain everyday leading up to the first practice day. We just wanted to be prepared as April can certainly be a damp month."
Work on an upgraded lighting and electrical system will also begin shortly as the list of renovations continues to grow at Five Mile Point Speedway. Many new bleacher seats and new complete sections will be in place for season opener as well.
