KIRKWOOD, NY…A volunteer day has been set up for Saturday, April 17th at Five Mile Point Speedway. The day will be used for a general "sprucing up" at the facility as preparations continue for the 54th Annual season opener on Saturday, May 8th.
The day has been established after many people have asked if they could volunteer their time to participate at the speedway. The long winter can certainly take its toll on a facility and tasks such as painting and "sprucing up" will take place on this day.
Work continues on the facility as the 50 Big Block/Small Block Modified season opener quickly approaches. A new racing surface has already been put in place with hours of work going into the effort to help blend the new surface with the old. The inside guardrail has been torn out with a new concrete retaining wall to be put in place as well.
The run off areas of the speedway have all been reshaped and made to accommodate a car should it exit off the turns. Higher embankments have been added in that area to safely slow a car down as well.
Five Mile Point Speedway track operator Andrew Harpell remarked, "We were approached by so many people over the winter at various car shows that just wanted to volunteer time to help get the speedway ready for the opening day event. So many people had stories to share of fond memories and how they feel a strong attachment to our historic speedway." He added, "It's really overwhelming how much the speedway means to people in the southern tier and I am so excited about getting the season underway."
All are welcome to attend the volunteer day at the speedway on Saturday, April 17th. Food and beverages will be provided by the speedway along with paint and other necessitated items.
