April 3rd, 2005
KIRKWOOD, NY…The Five Mile Point Speedway Southern Tier Open for Patriot Sprints has been rescheduled from the original date of Saturday, April 9th to the new date of Saturday, April 16th. The change was warranted due to the extremely wet spring time conditions. Race time on April 16th will be 5 p.m.
The rescheduling of the event has set up a big two days of racing for the Southern Tier Open Weekend on Saturday, April 16th and Sunday, April 17th. The Patriot Sprints will highlight the racing action on Saturday with the first Sprint Car race of 2005 in New York State. The Sportsman will compete in a 30 lap open event on that day along with a 25 lap open for the Pure Stock drivers.
All focus will then shift to the very next day with running of the Modified portion of the Southern Tier Open. The Sunday afternoon show will start at 2 p.m. with open events for the Street Stocks and 4 Cylinder Stocks along with the IMCA/UMP Shootout.
Track crews have been able to get considerable work done on the speedway but despite their best efforts the saturating rains over this past weekend will make the grounds too wet for April 9th. The speedway expansion in turns one and two were completed this past week with only the placement of the concrete barricades remaining. The speedway is a full forty feet wider and much, much more banked in the first and second turns. Over one thousand yards of clay were also trucked in last fall to settle over the winter.
The additional room will provide the Sprint Cars a very fast and competitive speedway surface for the Southern Tier Open on April 16th. Track operator Andrew Harpell commented, “We made the decision to push the event back one week in order to allow the race teams and spectators time to prepare for the new date.” He added, We just want to ensure all of the race teams that the surface will be in the best possible condition for the first weekend of racing and the extra time now available to us will certainly aid our efforts.”
For the Sprint Car teams the Southern Tier Open will serve as round one of the Five Mile Point Speedway Triple Crown for the division. A $500 bonus will be offered to a driver that wins any one of the three events of the Triple Crown. If a driver should win two of the three events they would receive a $1,500 bonus and should a driver sweep the series he/she would earn a $2,500 bonus at the end. The only requirement is that bonus money will only be paid to winning drivers that compete in all three Triple Crown events.
Five Mile Point Speedway will be set to go green with the 55th consecutive season on April 16th and 17th with the running of the Southern Tier Open. For further information please contact the Five Mile Point Speedway offices at (607) 775-5555 or log on to www.fivemilepointspeedway.net for more.
