KIRKWOOD, NY…The Big Block/Small Block 50 lap season opener is set for Saturday, May 8th at Five Mile Point Speedway. The season opener will serve as a Victoria 200 All Star race qualifier for the Big Block/Small Block teams.
The long awaited season opener at the fast clay quarter mile oval is just around the corner. A tremendous amount of excitement surrounds the return of the Big Block Modifieds to weekly competition. The past battles between the Big Block and Small Block teams is well documented. That should be no different this year as the teams prepare for the 50 lap season opener.
Last season's 50 lap finale saw the Small Block Modified teams dominate as they captured four of the top five positions at the finish. Young Five Mile Point Speedway standout Rich Keehle topped all of the invaders to wrap up the '03 season in his Small Block Modified. He's certainly hoping to start the new season with another 50 lap victory.
"The debate over which motor program has an advantage has gone on for years here at Five Mile Point Speedway", commented track operator Andrew Harpell. He added, "On a fast, banked ¼ mile speedway like this the past winning percentage is about 50 percent for both small blocks and big blocks. This isn't a speedway where an invader usually can stop in and be dominant, that was evident last fall in the finale when the weekly campaigners were impressive."
An added bonus for the opening day 50 lap winner will be a spot in the Victoria 200 All-Star race at Fulton Speedway. This race serves as a third and final opportunity for teams to make the 200 lapper should they fail to qualify through their heat or consolation. The driver that earns this opportunity will garner an added $200 should they not qualify in the event.
The opening day excitement in the southern tier is already reaching high levels as fans look forward to May 8th at Five Mile Point Speedway. Many facility updates and improvements have taken place in preparation for the 54th season opener.
