KIRKWOOD, NY…The second practice day scheduled forSaturday, May 1st at Five Mile Point Speedway has been cancelled. The speedway staff is now busy preparing forthe 54th season opener on Saturday, May 8th at 6:30p.m. The season opener will see a 50lapper for the Big Block/Small Block Modifieds.
The speedway was able to get their first practice day inthis past Saturday with a large turnout of participants and a fantastic racetrack surface. Drivers in attendancewere thrilled with the tacky smooth racing surface that was provided forpractice. The new Hoosier racing tirestook to the quarter mile oval with no tire wear and what drivers described as a“very racey tire”.
Five Mile Point Speedway track operator Andrew Harpellhad planned on adding even more clay after the first practice day. Those plans will hold true this week asadditional clay is being trucked in. With the prospect of rain for the first part of the week the decisionwas made to cancel the second practice day in order to allow track crews toproperly prepare the speedway for the May 8th season opener.
The season opener will see the return of the BigBlock/Small Block Modifieds in a 50 lap shootout. Also in competition will be the Sportsman Modifieds, UMPModifieds, Pure Stocks and Legends Cars. Race time for this big night of racing is set for 6:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to donate canned goods forthe CHOW food pantries may do so at the drop off barrels that will be set up onseason opening night.
