Danny Creeden Becomes First Time Winner of Southern Tier Open.

DANNY CREEDEN WINS 18^TH SOUTHERN TIER OPEN AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY ON SUNDAY.

KIRKWOOD, NY…Danny Creeden collected his first ever Five Mile Point Speedway Modified victory in the 18^th running of the Southern Tier Open on Sunday. The victory in the 40 lap Modified feature netted Creeden $2,500. Denny Decker was the Street Stock feature winner and Joel Batzel was the Sportsman feature winner. Both of those winners earned $1,000 each for their victories. Andy Brigham swept the Lightning Cat main events.

Twenty five starters took the green for the 18^th running of the Modified Southern Tier Open. Danny Tyler quickly took the lead from his pole starting spot at the drop of the green. Tyler opened up a slight early lead as Stewart Friesen wasted no time moving up from his fourth starting place to second by lap 4. Friesen swung to the outside of the quarter mile as he and Tyler battled for the lead. Friesen would take command on lap 7 leaving Tyler and Creeden to do battle for second place.

Friesen immediately opened up a sizeable lead over the field as the great battle for second place continued. On lap 16 Friesen would see his big lead evaporate as the lapped car of Brett Tonkin spun directly in front of the race leader. Friesen and Tonkin made heavy contact forcing Friesen to pull to the pits. Creeden had taken over second place prior to the caution and was now the race leader. On the restart Creeden and Tyler battled for the point for several laps prior to Creeden pulling away for good. Creeden would go on for his first Modified win at the speedway. Tyler had his best career finish by winding up in second place. FMP Rookie Jamie Batzel finished third after starting sixth. Woodhull Raceway defending track champion Billy VanPelt finished fourth and fellow FMP Rookie Justin Holland wound up fifth after starting tenth.

Denny Decker started on the pole and led all twenty laps of the Street Stock feature event to record the $1,000 victory. Gene Sharpsteen made several bids for the lead over the final five laps but was unable to make a serious challenge. Sharpsteen would wind up second followed by Bob Bouno, Ryan Stone and Rich Green.

Joel Batzel started on the outside pole in the 25 lap Sportsman feature event and would also lead the entire distance for the $1,000 victory. Matt Janczuk closed the gap during the final laps but Batzel would go on to win by three car lengths. Eddie White, Jim LaRock and Jeff Crambo rounded out the top five. Only two cautions would slow the pace of the event.

Andy Brigham was the top dog in the twin Lightning Cat feature events on Sunday. In the heldover cat feature Brigham took the lead on lap 7 and the regularly scheduled feature would see Brigham lead from wire to wire.
