SATURDAY, JULY 1ST RACING AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY CANCELED. RACING TO RESUME ON SATURDAY, JULY 8TH AT 6:30 P.M.

KIRKWOOD, NY -

Five Mile Point Speedway owner Andrew Harpell has made the decision to cancel this Saturday night’s racing program at the speedway. Racing will return to popular quarter mile oval next Saturday, July 8th at 6:30 p.m.

Five Mile Point Speedway sustained no damage due to the rains and flooding that has devastated the Southern Tier. However, the decision to cancel the racing on Saturday was based on a number of other factors.

“We want to support the town of Kirkwood and surrounding area any way that we can,” commented Harpell. “We don’t want to tie up any of our areas already overstretched medical and fire staff that is needed to put on a racing event.”

For the past day and a half the parking lot of Five Mile Point Speedway that is entered at both Williams Street and Francis Street has been the solo thoroughfare for area emergency responders and residents in the Five Mile Point area of Kirkwood. Harpell remarked, “It has been a steady flow of traffic through our parking lot. Town employees and fire fighters have had to use our lot for emergency responses and we will continue to accommodate them any way that we can.”

A number of Five Mile Point Speedway employees, drivers, crews and spectators have not even been able to get to their homes to know what is left from the flooding. Lastly Harpell said, “We just wish the best for our racing community and all of the residents of the Southern Tier, us holding a race Saturday just isn’t a priority with the situation people are facing.”

At the time of this writing the Five Mile Point Speedway exit off of I 81 South was still closed due to the flooding. The Five Mile Point shopping plaza, post office, town hall, New York State Troopers barracks, Fire Department, businesses and residents (all within a quarter mile of the speedway) have been severely damaged due to the flooding.

Racing will return to Five Mile Point Speedway next Saturday, July 8th for People’s National Bank/Conklin Community Night. All town of Conklin residents will be admitted free! On the racing card will be complete programs for the Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, IMCA Modifieds and 99.1 the WHALE Figure 8’s.
