KIRKWOOD, NY…Five Mile Point Speedway is set to host one of the summers biggest double headers as the Race of Champions Modified and Sportsman teams head to the quarter mile on Wednesday, July 13th. The Big Block/Small Block Modifieds will gun it out in a 75 lapper with a 40 lap Sportsman RoC event on tap as well. Race time is 7:30 p.m.
The historic quarter mile will once again play a major role in the northeast Modified racing as the Race of Champions Dirt Tours invade. This will mark the first ever trip for the R.o.C Dirt Trail to the Southern Tier oval but many of the area race fans are familiar with the Race of Champions name. The Race of Champions Asphalt Tour began at the Tioga Motorsports Park and has seen numerous area events including that facility and the Chemung Speedrome.
Area race fans are going to be treated to one of the most diverse fields to assemble at any dirt speedway in the northeast this summer. The Modified event will be a 75 lap South Region point race but due to the central location of the Five Mile, many of the top North Region teams are set to invade as well. The competition every Saturday night has been intense as there have been seven different winners in as many weeks in the FMP Modified division this season. Combine the local talent with the invaders and this will be a “must see” event.
The first R.o.C South Region event took place at the Big Diamond Raceway back on June 7th and the field was filled with all-star talent. Jeff Strunk recorded the popular win then and will make his return to Five Mile for the first time since 1995. All of the top ten drivers in the Big Diamond 75 lap finish are expected to be at the “Point”. That list includes: Rick Laubach, Meme DeSantis, Ray Swinehart, Doug Hoffman, Brian Weaver, Mitch Gibbs, J.R. Crouse, Kevin Hirthler and Mike Gular.
Two-time R.o.C North Region race winner Bobby Varin is already entered and is looking to make a strong return in his Five Mile Point return. The “Sensational” Jimmy Horton will return for the first time since 1996 and his son Jimmy Horton IV will be making his first ever start in the Sportsman R.o.C 40. Other notable drivers that were in action at Big Diamond include: Kenny Brightbill, Craig VonDohren, Billy Pauch Jr., Jerry Higbie Jr., Keith Hoffman, Barry Davis and many more.
Five Mile Point Speedway continues to showcase one of the biggest fields of Modifieds on a weekly basis with some of the greatest competition in recent memory. In seven Modified events seven different drivers have graced victory lane. Weekly standouts like Jim Crawn, Brian Weaver, Rich Keehle, J.R. Crouse and George Hildebrandt will be looking to fight off the invading talent.
A huge field of both Modifieds and Sportsman are anticipated for the Race of Champions Dirt double header at Five Mile Point Speedway on Wednesday, July 13th. Make your plans now for this must see event.
