KIRKWOOD, NYÖThe historic Five Mile Point Speedway will start a new chapter as the equally historic Race of Champions Tour makes a stop this Wednesday, July 13th. The Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour will see a double header on tap with a 75 lap Modified and 40 lap Sportsman tour event for this Wednesday. Race time is 7:30 p.m.
The roots of the Race of Champions started fifty-five years ago on the one mile Langhorne dirt track. Since that time the event grew into the biggest asphalt Modified event and second longest run race in the United States. Fifty-five years ago Five Mile Point Speedway opened up for itís first year of racing and little did anyone know at the time how successful the quarter mile oval would be.
Both Five Mile Point Speedway and the Race of Champions have an incredible history but for both the future is now. In March, the Race of Champions Motorsports group expanded upon the successful R.o.C Asphalt Modified Tour by launching dirt tours for both the Big Block/Small Block Modifieds and Sportsman Modifieds.
The first Big Block/Small Block Modified event saw fifty-eight teams in attendance at the Fonda Speedway. Bobby Varin emerged the victor of the fifty lapper on that warm April day and the beginning of the R.o.C Dirt Modfiied Tour was well underway. Since that time Utica-Rome Speedway, Penn Can Speedway and Big Diamond Raceway have all hosted either Big Block or Sportsman events. No less than forty-three Sportsman have attended the previous dirt tour events heading into Five Mile Point Speedway.
Five Mile Point Speedway will now be the first facility to host both the Race of Champions Dirt Big Block/Small Block tour and Sportsman tours on the same card. The anticipation of the event has been huge and a star studded field is expected in both classes.
