Figure Eights Join Thurs. Show; 358-Modified Rules Set
By BRETT DEYO

KIRKWOOD, NY - Race fans who attend the Thurs., Aug. 4 T3 All-Star Series show at Five Mile Point Speedway will get more bang for their buck - quite literally.

The zany Figure Eight division will accompany the 50-lap, $2,000-to-win T3 All-Star Series 358-Mod event and the 30-lap Hurricane Pure Stock special at the quarter-mile oval, promoter Andrew Harpell announced this week. Race time has been bumped up to 7 p.m. General admission is $15.

"The Figure Eights have evolved into one of our most popular attractions at the Point," Harpell said. "The class growing in number, and several of the competitors wanted another date.

"This should be a great addition to the show. The enthusiasm from the crowd on Saturday nights has been remarkable whenever the Figure Eights hit the track."

The Figure Eights have made three appearances at FMP in '05, with Steve Simpson (two wins) and Steve Dechow (one win) checking into Victory Lane. Car counts have increased to an average of 10-plus.

For newcomers to the Point, the Figure Eights are essentially limited, "pure stock" type cars that race in heat events and a 10-lap feature using the turns of the stock car track. The cars then dart through the infield, where the action takes place at the X, or "Danger Zone." Many of the Figure Eight competitors have adopted paint schemes to match cars from the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.

A banner field of small-blocks is expected to descend on the 55-year-old facility for the special. Among the special visitors to the Point will be Danny Johnson, driving a car owned by Roger Heroux. Former champion Mitch Gibbs will be in attendance, along with Brian Weaver and the local talent.

T3 stars Billy Van Pelt, Steve Hartman, Dylan Dewert, Aaron Jacobus, Stacy and Mike Jackson are expected to attend, along with invaders from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, who will congregate on FMP in an attempt to snatch the cash.

Any 92 x 13-inch tire will be permitted in the T3 event.

Steel head, non-ported small-block engines on gas, as per '04 DIRT rules, should weigh 2,400 lbs. with no tolerance.

Ported steel head small-blocks, aluminum head small-blocks or any ported small-block on alcohol should must weigh 2,500 lbs.

Big Diamond (Pa.)/Grandview (Pa.) 9-to-1 compression small-blocks should weigh 2,400 lbs.

All engines must be 358 c.i. or less for this event.

Contact the speedway office at (607) 775-5555 for further information on rules or visit the official website: www.fivemilepointspeedway.net.

Heat race starting positions will be determined by a draw and the top 12 qualifiers will redraw for the feature.

Led by Kenny Shupp, the T3 All-Star Series debuted at Black Rock (N.Y.) Speedway on April 16. Dylan Dewert picked up the win, besting a stout 25-car field.

The inaugural T3 All-Star Series champion will be determined on Fri., Oct. 14 at FMP as part of the National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend.

Other stops on the T3 All-Star Series in 2005 are: Sept. 17 Woodhull (N.Y.) Speedway, Sept. 23 Black Rock Speedway; Sept. 24 Little Valley (N.Y.) Speedway; Sept 30 The New Afton (N.Y.) Speedway; and Oct. 1 Mercer (Pa.) Raceway Park.
