September 30th, 2006
KIRKWOOD, NY -
The traditional National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend is one of the longest traditions in short track racing and this year the event title certainly holds true. Four season long touring series championships will be decided at Five Mile Point Speedway over the two days of Friday, October 13th and Saturday, October 14th.
On Friday, the T3 358 Modified Series finale will take place to determine who will be the 2006 tour champion. Last year it took three attempts to get the event in as rain played havoc with the race. When it was all said and done on November 6th Mitch Gibbs had bested a field of 42 small block drivers for the win. A big field of the top 358 Modified teams are expected for this 40 lapper on Friday. The top small block Friday finisher in the Southern Tier 100 on Saturday will also receive a $500 bonus.
Also to be decided on Friday will be the Race of Champions Dirt Sportsman overall championship. It is only fitting that the two R.o.C regional champions Danny Creedan (South Region) and Steve Way (North Region) will battle it out for the overall title. Creedan leads Way by only 29 markers entering the finale. Way scored the win at Fonda Speedway recently to help close the gap on Creedan. Southern Tier standout Kenny Titus has remained in the hunt after a solid eighth place finish in his first ever Fonda Speedway start. The R.o.C Sportsman finale will be a 40 lap event.
The annual Northeast Pure Stock Championship will be held on Friday as well at Five Mile Point Speedway. The top five finishers in this event will also earn guaranteed starting spots for the Southern Tier Showdown 75 lap event on Saturday, November 4th. The Southern Tier Showdown will pay $1,000 to the race winner. Over the years the Northeast Pure Stock Championship has pitted some of the best full fender drivers in what transpired to be great racing. The Pure Stock teams will duke it out in a 40 lap event on Friday of the National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend.
It is clear that the Friday portion of the National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend will be big in itself. The action will really hit a premium on Saturday for the 36th running of the Southern Tier 100 for Modifieds. The race will serve is the final point race on the 2006 R.o.C Dirt Modified Tour. The race winner will earn $5,000. Also on the card will be the series finale for the Trackside Products Super Stock Series(30) and the IMCA Modified Empire State Series 30 lapper.
Racing on Friday will get underway at 7:00 p.m. with Saturday action to go green at 5:00 p.m. For further information please log on to www.fivemilepointspeedway.net or phone (607) 775-5555.
