SOUTHERN TIER OPEN WEEKEND FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18TH AND 19TH AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY

KIRKWOOD, NYÖFive Mile Point Speedway is gearing up for a huge season ending weekend. The track will play host to the Southern Tier Open Weekend on Friday and Saturday, October 18th and 19th highlighted by Sprint Cars and Big Block and Small Block Modifieds.

The weekend will get underway on Friday, October 18th with Southern Tier Open events for the 360 Sprint Cars as well as the Sportsman and Grand American/IMCA Modifieds. Race time on Friday will be 7:00 p.m.

The weekend concludes on Saturday, October 19th with the 50 lap Southern Tier Open for the Big Block and Small Block Modifieds along with STAR Series Championship events for the Pure Stocks and Four Cylinder Stocks. Race time on Saturday is 5:00 p.m.

The 360 Sprint Cars will make their third appearance at the Point in 2002. George Suprick was the winner of the NSA Sprint feature in June. Young Jeff VanDusen took home top honors in the August show.

R.C. Faigle, who has competed at the Point all season in a 358 Modified, set a new track record in August in his Sprinter. He toured the quarter mile oval at a blistering 13.50 seconds. Look for someone to challenge the record when the Sprinters return on Friday in a $1,200 to win show.

The Sprinters will be joined on Friday by an open show for the Sportsman and Grand American/IMCA Modifieds. Sportsman rules are open to any DIRT, Afton, Penn Can, Thunder Mt., Big Diamond or Moc-A-Tek. The only exceptions are DIRT legal two barrel carburetors are mandatory. Sail panels will be allowed. The weight rule is 2,500 pounds; however, if you run aluminum wheels you must weigh 2,600 pounds. The winner of their 30 lap feature will take home $600.

The Grand American/IMCA Modifieds will also be in competition on Friday night. If you are IMCA legal, you are legal for this event. The winner of their 25 lap feature will pocket $600. There is an entry fee for Fridayís show. The fee is $30 in advance or $35 the day of the show. The entry fee includes the drivers admission.

Saturday the action shifts to the Big Block and Small Block Modifieds as they compete in the 50 lap Southern Tier Open, paying $2,500 to win. Last year 57 Modifieds signed into the pits for one of the best shows of the year. Fans can expect another stellar field of cars for this years renewal.

Rules for the Modified show find Big Blocks, Big Small Blocks, Aluminum head 358ís or 358ís on alcohol having to weigh 2,550 pounds. Steel head 358ís on gas must weigh 2,450 pounds. Sail panels are allowed and tires are open to any 92" x 13" compound.

The Pure Stocks will compete in their final STAR Series Championship event of the season. Their 30 lap feature will pay at least $500 to win. B & D Exhaust has posted a bonus to any driver that can win his heat and go on to win the feature. The bonus is currently up to $300, which would make the winners share $800.

The Four Cylinder Stocks will also be competing in their final STAR Series Championship event. Their 20 lap feature will pay $300 to win.

The entry fee for the Pure Stocks and Four Cylinder Stocks is $30 in advance or $35 on the day of the show. The Modified entry fee is $35 in advance or $50 on the day of the show. Entry fees include the drivers admission to the pits. Race time on Saturday is 5:00 p.m. The rain date for the weekend is slated for Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
