KIRKWOOD, NYÖFive Mile Point Speedway will pay tribute to its 2003 Track Champions on Saturday, November 15th. The festive event will take place at the St. Johnís Memorial Center in Johnson City, New York. Tickets will go on sale at this Saturdayís season finale.
Dan Vauter will be honored as the youngest Track Champion in the 53 year history of Five Mile Point Speedway. The 18 year old 358 Modified ace quietly stayed in contention throughout the season and locked up the title on championship night.
James Cornell made another statement for the youth movement as he dominated the Street Stock division. He collected 12 feature wins enroute to the championship.
Jeff Cleveland won the first ever UMP Modified Track Championship. The point battle came right down to the wire before Cleveland his first career championship.
Mahlon Shoemaker was the only driver to successfully defend his title. Shoemaker claimed his second consecutive Pure Stock Track Championship after another strong season.
They, along with the top ten finishers in all four divisions, will be honored for their 2003 achievements. There will also be many other special awards handed out on this night. Special awards will be presented for Best Appearing Car, Most Improved Driver, Most Popular Driver, Hard Luck Driver, Rookie of the Year, the Glenn Knapp, Sr. Owner of the Year Award and the Irv Heath Memorial Dedication Award.
This years banquet marks the return to the St. Johnís Memorial Center after a one year absence due to a scheduling conflict. That means everyone can look forward to their famous Halupkiís as part of the delicious family style dinner that will be served.
The night will begin with a cocktail hour beginning at 6:00 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7:00 p.m. followed by award ceremonies at 8:00 p.m. The night will be capped off with entertainment by the Sounds of Illusion from 9:00 p.m. until midnight.
Tickets are $30 apiece and will be available this Saturday at the season ending Southern Tier Open. Tickets will also be on sale at Dougís Speed Shop, the speedway office or through the mail. Tickets will only be available until November 7th. Tickets will not be available at the door.
To purchase your tickets through the mail, please send a check or money order to Point Motorsports, Inc., P.O. Box 408, Kirkwood, New York 13795. Tables of ten can be reserved but must be requested at the speedway office.
The banquet will carry special significance as it will be the final one held by Promoter Dan Harpell. He recently announced his plans to step down after 15 seasons at the helm and this will be his final official event as Five Mile Point Speedway Promoter.
