The Sportsman and Grand American/IMCA Modifieds will also be in competition on Friday. The Sportsman will be allowed to use sail panels. DIRT legal two barrel carburetors are required. Aluminum wheels are allowed but you must weigh 2,600 pounds, 100 more than the steel wheeled cars.
On Saturday the Big Block and Small Block Modifieds will battle it out in the 50 lap Southern Tier Open, paying $2,500 to win. Mitch Gibbs will be looking to put his name alongside a couple of Modified legends in this event. With a win he would tie Chuck Akulis for the most wins in a season at the Point. Akulis holds the record with 13. Also with a win, Gibbs would join Stan Ploski as the only driver to win both the Southern Tier 100 and the Southern Tier Open in the same year. Ploski did it in 1973.
Past winners of the Southern Tier Open include Ivan Little, Lou Lazzaro, Frank Mears, Ploski, Chuck Ciprich, Jack Johnson, Jim Crawn and Mike Colsten. Ploski, Johnson, Crawn and Colsten have all won both the Southern Tier 100 and Southern Tier Open but only Ploski has done it in the same year.
The Pure Stock and Four Cyinder Stock STAR Series Championships will be decided on Saturday night as well. The Pure Stocks will go 30 laps for $500 to win. That amount could swell to $800 to win if the driver wins both the heat and feature, courtesy of B&D Exhaust. The Four Cylinder Stocks will run a 20 lap feature for $300 to win.
