By BRETT DEYO

KIRKWOOD, NY.....Five Mile Point Speedway has added the “Southern Tier Showdown” for Pure Stocks on Saturday, November 5th. The 75 lap event will pay $1,000 to the winner. Race time is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Figure 8 teams will also be in action along with a 4 Cylinder enduro race. An open practice will take place earlier in the day from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and a racers flea market will be held on the grounds throughout the day.

The practice session will be a good opportunity for teams competing in the following day’s race program to get dialed in. A special rookie practice session will be held too for drivers that may have just purchased or are looking to purchase a race car. The practice will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Grandstand admission is free for the practice.

The racers flea market will be set up behind the main grandstand area. This will allow venders both the opportunity to showcase their items to teams practicing but also to fans. With grandstand admission being free, venders should see a lot of interest from fans looking at their equipment. The flea market will open at 8:00 a.m. and venders are welcome to stay through the racing program if they choose.

The “Southern Tier Showdown” 75 will see twenty-four drivers qualifying through heat race and consolation events. The top three drivers in final point standings at Afton, Five Mile, Penn Can, Skyline and Thunder Mountain will be added to the field as guaranteed starters if they fail to qualify through the heats or consolation events. This will allow the best drivers in the Southern Tier to settle the score for the final event of the season. The race is open to all northeast Pure Stock teams. A minimum of thirty teams will take the green.

A special Figure 8 event and 4 Cylinder enduro will also be held on Saturday with race time set for 5 p.m. For race teams it will be one last chance to race before the long winter season sets in. After the open practice, the pits will be cleared and teams will be allowed to register for the racing program.

On Sunday, the third attempt to run the opening day of the National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend will take place. The Race of Champions Dirt Sportsman, T3 – 358 Modified and BRC Late Model Series championships will be on the line. Race time on Sunday is 2 p.m. For information please contact the speedway offices at (607) 775-5555 or log on to www.fivemilepointspeedway.net for more.
