VAUTER, CORNELL, CLEVELAND AND SHOEMAKER TO BE HONORED AS FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY TRACK CHAMPIONS

KIRKWOOD, NYÖFive Mile Point Speedway will hold its annual Awards Banquet on Saturday, November 15th at the St. Johnís Memorial Center in Johnson City. Dan Vauter, James Cornell, Jeff Cleveland and Mahlon Shoemaker will all be honored as Track Champions.

The top ten drivers in the final point standings in the Modifieds, Street Stocks, UMP Modifieds and Pure Stocks will be recognized for their efforts. Special awards will be presented for Most Improved Drivers, Rookies of the Year, Most Popular Drivers, Hard Luck Drivers and Best Appearing Cars. The Glenn Knapp, Sr. Owner of the Year Award and the Irv Heath Memorial Dedication Award will cap off the special presentations.

The cocktail hour will begin at 6:00 p.m. with dinner to follow at 7:00 p.m. A family style, all you wish to eat dinner will be served featuring the famous St. Johnís Haluptsiís. Awards will take place at 8:00 p.m. followed by entertainment provided by the Sounds of Illusion from 9:30 p.m. to midnight.

Tickets are $30 apiece and are currently available at the speedway office or at Dougís Speed Shop on Court Street in Binghamton. Tickets can be purchased by mail by sending a check or money order to: Point Motorsports, Inc., P.O. Box 408, Kirkwood, New York 13795. Tickets will only be available until Friday, November 7th. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

In spite of the lousy weather, the 2003 racing season at the Point provided a ton of thrills and excitement. 18 year old Dan Vauter became the youngest Modified Track Champion in the 53 year history of the track. 20 year old James Cornell dominated the Street Stock division in his first full year of competition at the Point.

Jeff Cleveland became Five Mile Pointís and New York Stateís first ever UMP Modified Champion. Mahlon Shoemaker was the only driver to successfully defend his title by taking Pure Stock Track Champion honors.

The 2003 season also marks the end of an era as Promoter Dan Harpell is stepping down after 15 years at the helm. The banquet will mark his last official event as Promoter of the famed quarter mile oval.
