FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY SIGNS ON WITH UMP FOR 2003 SEASON

KIRKWOOD, NY…Five Mile Point Speedway will join forces with the United Midwest Promoters (UMP) for the 2003 racing season. The announcement was made by Promoter Dan Harpell.

The former Grand American Modifieds will now be known as the UMP Modifieds for 2003. Five Mile Point will be the first track in New York state to carry a UMP Sanction. The Indiana based sanctioning body is predominant in the midwest and this is their first venture into the northeast.

UMP rules are very similar to the IMCA rules with the single biggest exception being the tires. The UMP tires are a Hoosier brand and they offer three different compounds, a soft, medium and hard. Five Mile Point will allow the A-40 Medium and the H-40 Hard compounds. The D-40 Soft compound will NOT BE ALLOWED.

Each UMP State Champion receives $1,000 for their efforts with the top ten in the standings sharing an approximate $2,500 point fund. Because Five Mile Point is the only UMP track in New York State, that money will go to the top ten in the tracks final point standings.

The UMP National Champion will pocket a cool $25,000. The point season runs from April 18th through September 28th. The UMP Nationals will take place on October 10th through 12th at the famed Eldora Speedway in Ohio.

"We’re very excited to give our drivers the opportunity to compete for a National Championship", said Harpell. "We are trying to build this class up and the new softer compound tire has been well received by the competitors. The rock hard tires that this class has run in the past has actually kept people out of the division. The feedback has been overwhelming. It has been a real pleasant surprise", Harpell added.

Because of the UMP Sanction, Five Mile Point has decided to move its season opener up one week to Saturday, April 19th. "The UMP National points begin on that weekend so we want to give our drivers every opportunity to get into the point chase", said Harpell. A practice session will be held on Saturday, April 12th.

The UMP Modifieds will join the headline 358 Modifieds as well as the Street Stocks and Pure Stocks as the weekly show at the Point in 2003. A new starting time of 6:15 p.m. will go into effect in 2003 as well.

The April 19th Season Opener will be highlighted by the Spring Championship 50 lapper for the 358 Modifieds. Spring Championship events will be held for the Street Stocks, UMP Modifieds and Pure Stocks as well.
