FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY RECEIVES NEW CLAY AND DRAINAGE

KIRKWOOD, NY…The Five Mile Point Speedway track crew has been busy preparing for the upcoming 2003 racing season. New drainage and clay have been added in anticipation of the season opening Spring Championship on Saturday, April 19th.

A new drain has been put in between turns one and two to eliminate the water problem in that corner. The old drain collapsed last Spring and water had to be continually pumped off the corner. The new pipe was delivered shortly after the last race last October, however the awful winter that set in early forced the postponement of the project until the spring.

"The drainage was a real nuisance last season and created a lot of extra work to prepare the track for racing", said Promoter Dan Harpell. "It's good to know that we won't have to be pumping water off the corner every week and we can use that time for other projects", he added.

New clay has also been put down for the 2003 season. Last years surface was phenomenal. Last year drivers were greeted by a non abrasive race track that was extremely tire friendly. It showed as the car counts were at their highest in several years. There were no less than 31 Modifieds on any Saturday in August, which is typically a time of year where car counts tend to drop.

The same clay has been blended in to give it a deeper base, ensuring the same excellent surface as last year. The new clay was a real turning point last year in returning the track to prominence and this will only help to enhance that.

Drivers will have their first opportunity to try it out on Saturday, April 12th when the track opens for a practice session. Gates will open at 3:00 p.m. for inspection and practice will begin at 5:00 p.m. Practice is open to any class of car that will be in competition at the Point in 2003.

The track will officially begin the 2003 season the following Saturday, April 19th with Spring Championship events for all divisions. The big night of racing will be highlighted by a 50 lapper for the 358 Modifieds with championship points on the line. The big opener will make the practice session that much more important as drivers that get on the track the week before should have the heads up on the competition.

The excitement level continues to build in anticipation of the 2003 racing season at Five Mile Point Speedway. See the 358 Modifieds, Street Stocks, UMP Modifieds and Pure Stocks every Saturday night at the Southern Tiers premier racing facility. Race time is 6:15 p.m.

Five Mile Point Speedway is located at the intersection of routes 17 and 81 in Kirkwood, New York. For further information, please call the speedway office at 607-775-5555 or log onto our website at www.fivemilepointspeedway.net.
