April 7th, 2003

KIRKWOOD, NY…Five Mile Point Speedway will hold an open practice session this Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Drivers will be gearing up for the 2003 season opener the following Saturday, April 19th.

This Saturday’s practice is open to any class of car that will be competing at the Point in 2003. Gates will open at 3:00 p.m. and practice will begin at 5:00 p.m.

Practice takes on great importance this year for a few reasons. The first being that it will be the only test session before the big Spring Championship Season Opener on the 19th. The 358 Modifieds will open the season with a 50 lapper with extra distance races slated for the Street Stocks, UMP Modifieds and Pure Stocks as well.

Practice will be especially important to the UMP Modifieds. The former Grand American Modifieds will now be sanctioned by United Midwest Promoters (UMP) and with the sanction comes new tires. The cars will now be on a much softer Hoosier tire, a rule that has the drivers in this class very happy.

Last years tires were a very hard compound that the drivers found difficult to hook up, thus causing a great deal of frustration and ultimately stunting the growth of the class. The new tires will allow them to hook up and fans will see these cars turning times similar to the headline 358 Modifieds.

The 2003 season will get the official green flag on Saturday, April 19th at the new 6:15 p.m. start time. The night will be highlighted by a $1,500 to win 50 lapper for the 358 Modifieds with championship points on the line.

Last years excellent racing surface saw car counts at a nearly ten year high. There were over 30 358 Modifieds in the pits for every race in August last year, which is traditionally a time of year when car counts drop. The lack of tire wear from the excellent racing surface was the biggest factor in the solid car counts.

Look for a strong field of cars at the opener as drivers begin their quests for the season long championships in all divisions. Of course many of them will be out this Saturday to shake things down to get ready.

Pit gates will open at 3:00 p.m. for this Saturday’s practice. Cars will take to the track at 5:00 p.m. Admission is free in the grandstand. There is a charge to enter the pit area. The pit concession stand will be open for both the pit area and grandstand.
