KIRKWOOD, NY…Once again all day rains forced the cancellation of Saturday nights racing at Five Mile Point Speedway. It was the third consecutive rainout and fourth in eight weeks of racing.
The Briggs and Stratton Slingshot Series was scheduled to appear Saturday on B&D Exhaust Night. They will be rescheduled for another night later in the season. The new date will be released within the next couple of weeks.
In spite of all of the rainouts thus far, the Point is gearing up for some of its biggest shows of the year in the coming weeks. The 39th Annual Irv Heath Memorial will take place on Saturday, June 28th. The race, which is a tribute to the tracks founder, is a 50 lapper for the 358 Modifieds. They will be joined by the Street Stocks, UMP Modifieds and Pure Stocks. It is also Old Timers Night and the evening will be capped off with fireworks.
The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club will get to the Point on Saturday, July 19th. They will join the regular show as they make their first appearance at the Point since 1988. Look for a large field of cars on this night.
The next big show will take place on Tuesday, July 22nd with the running of the 53rd Anniversary Special. The 53 lapper for 358 Modifieds pays $2,500 to win and will be joined by a $700 to win show for the Street Stocks.
The Keystone Legend Cars have just been added to the schedule. They will be in competition at the Point on Saturday, August 2nd. With it being a tour event, you can expect to see as many as 25 to 30 cars on hand.
Coming on August 9th will be Open Wheel Excitement featuring the KARS and Patriot Sprint Cars. They will join the regular show of 358 Modifieds, Street Stocks, UMP Modifieds and Pure Stocks.
Season Championship Night will cap off the point season on Saturday, August 30th. Extra distance and extra dollar races will take place in all divisions as the 2003 track champions will be crowned.
The post season finds the National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend being held on Friday and Saturday, September 26th and 27th. The weekend is capped off with the Binghamton Pepsi-Cola Southern Tier 100.
The 2003 season concludes on Saturday, October 18th with the running of the Southern Tier Open. The 50 lap, $2,500 to win show is the only appearance of the Big Blocks at the Point in 2003. Last year Mitch Gibbs showed the Big Blocks the fast way around in his 358 Modified.
Although the rain has dampened a lot of spirits thus far in 2003, the season is just heating up. Make your plans now to pay a visit to Five Mile Point Speedway for some of the best racing in the northeast.
