KIRKWOOD, NY…. Mother Nature was the only one in Victory Lane at Five Mile Point Speedway on Saturday night. For the seventh time this season, rains had forced the postponement of activities which this past week included the Patriot Sprint Car Group and the KARS Sprint Cars. The annual Open Wheeled Excitement is a much anticipated event each season, and many of the Five Mile faithful were wondering if the 13.50 second lap record set in August, 2002 by R. C.Faigle would be shattered. The directors of both sprint car series along with Five Mile Point Speedway promoter, Dan Harpell will look over the available reschedule dates for the remainder of 2003. An announcement for a rescheduled date is expected as soon as Saturday night.
The 358 Modified points battle is shaping up to be one of the closest in recent memory with a slim, nearly anorexic lead of just one point by J. R. Crouse over Don Hart, Jr. Hart has visited victory lane once in 2003 with Crouse still looking to break into victory lane. The edge for Crouse has been his consistent finishes, ten to ten finished compared to just eight for Hart. The top two are followed closely by Dan Vauter, Jim Crawn and Bobby Puckett. Sixty Five points separate first place from fifth in the Modifieds.
The Street Stock points battle finds James Cornell topping the charts by seventy points over his next closest challenger, Rob Harder. Harder is coming off a win just two weeks ago, and will not give in until the final checkered flag on Season Championship night on August 30th.
Joe Price, Jr has taken the points lead away from Gary Dence in the UMP Modified division. Price collected his second win and his five point advantage two weeks ago. Price, along with Joel Batzel are the only UMP Modified drivers to finish in the top ten in every event this season.
Mahlon Shoemaker is the only 2002 Champion in a position to defend his title in 2003. Shoemaker has one win this season, but has had eight top five and ten top ten finished in eleven starts. Shoemaker will carry a 48-point lead over Charlie Gilbert into the racing action this weekend.
Don’t miss any of the exciting action as the season ending points battles really heat up. Get to the Point on Saturday night as the 358 Modifieds, UMP Modifieds, Street Stocks and Pure Stocks will tackle the quarter mile. There will be bicycle races for the kids ages 12 and under this Saturday night. Kids must have their own bicycle and helmet to participate. Gates open at 4:00 and Race Time is 6:15 pm
