OPEN WHEEL EXCITEMENT FEATURES SPRINT CARS THIS SATURDAY AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY

KIRKWOOD, NY...The Sprint Cars return to Five Mile Point Speedway this Saturday for Open Wheel Excitement on Fuccillo Ford Night. The New York based Patriot Sprints will take on Pennsylvaniaís KARS Sprints on the quarter mile oval. They will join the full show of 358 Modifieds, Street Stocks, UMP Modifieds and Pure Stocks beginning at 6:00 p.m.

This race was originally scheduled for August 9th but all day rain washed out the entire show. A 40 car field was expected then and this Saturday should be pretty much the same as the Sprinters really put on a show at the Point.

When the Sprint Cars returned to the Point in 1989, after a several year absence, Mike VanDusen broke Steve Kinsers track record of 14.98 seconds with a lap of 14.89 seconds. Kinser set the record in 1979 when the World of Outlaws made their first ever New York state appearance at Five Mile Point.

In 2002 VanDusenís son Jeff set a new track record by turning a blistering lap of 13.26 seconds. The Sprinters hadnít broke the 13 second mark at the Point until Fred Rahmer did it in 2001 with a 13.68. VanDusen knocked four tenths of a second off the record last year. Another four tenths this Saturday would put them in the 12 second bracket.

The Patriot Sprints are a new sanctioning body in 2003 and have had tremendous success. They have averaged nearly 30 cars at all of their shows this year. Add to that the Pennsylvania based KARS Sprinters and you have all of the makings for a tremendous show.

While the Sprinters will take center stage on this night, track regulars will be closely watching the point battles in all of the weekly divisions. The Modifieds are currently locked in one of the closest battles in the 53 year history of the track. Only three points separate the top three drivers and just 35 points stand between the top five. J.R. Crouse currently leads the way over Don Hart, Jr., Dan Vauter, Jim Crawn and Glenn Knapp. Crouse ironically is the only driver in the top seven in points that has yet to win a feature. There have been nine different winners thus far in 2003.

The UMP Modifieds are also very tight with Joe Price, Jr., Jeff Cleveland, Gary Dence, Joe Cole and Joel Batzel all with a shot at the title. Mahlon Shoemaker is trying to defend his Pure Stock title but has Charlie Gilbert, Jim Ortiz and Shane Wolf all within striking distance. The only title that looks to be fairly secure is in the Street Stock division where 10 time winner James Cornell has a virtually insurmountable lead over Rob Harder.

This Saturday will be the final night for regular points. Next Saturday, September 6th will be Season Championship Night where championship points will be on the line for the 358 Modifieds, Street Stocks and Pure Stocks. The UMP Modifieds follow UMP points so they will be competing for regular points that night. If you are a fan of open wheel racing then look no further than Five Mile Point Speedway this Saturday on Fuccillo Ford Night. Itís Open Wheel Excitement featuring the Patriot and KARS Sprint Cars along with a full show of 358 Modifieds, Street Stocks, UMP Modifieds and Pure Stocks.
