Binghamton, NY: The local racing community is coming together in a big way to assist Dave Locke in his ever-mounting medical expenses. Dave was injured on July 26th when a mechanical failure on the 29th lap in the 358 Modified feature at Five Mile Point severely injured the driver’s left leg. The drive shaft snapped off, and embedded itself in the left calf of the Binghamton, NY driver. Surgery performed in the early hours following the accident re-established circulation to the lower leg after two arteries supplying blood to the left foot were severed. Other surgeries were performed to cleanse the wound, and close the entrance point of the drive shaft end. Intense physical therapy is ongoing with positive results.
Dave was at Five Mile Point Speedway as a spectator on Saturday night, August 30. Locke is still facing more surgery, this time to repair his Achilles tendon, which was severed during the accident. The Achilles tendon injury is what is hindering his ability to walk at this time. The response of the racing community has been overwhelming for the quiet Locke, but he is indeed appreciative of the assistance and support. Several benefits and raffles have been set up for Locke. Robert Hitchcock from Kattellville, NY has handcrafted a beautiful clock that is being raffled off at Five Mile Point Speedway.
The winner will be selected on Saturday September 27th during the running of the Southern Tier 100. Hitchcock has over 50 hours of work into the clock, which is valued at over $ 450.00. Tickets are available at Five Mile Point Speedway. A Benefit for Dave and Mandy Locke will be held on Sunday October 26th 2003 at the Vestal American Legion, Jensen Road, Vestal, NY. A buffet dinner is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm with an Auction scheduled for 4:00 pm. 50/50 raffle tickets are being sold at local tracks with the winner to be drawn at the Benefit dinner.
