FIVE MILE POINT’S NATIONAL QUARTER MILE DIRT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND IS STEEPED IN HISTORY AND TRADITION; TAKES GREEN FLAG SEPTEMBER 27TH AND 28TH

KIRKWOOD, NY…Five Mile Point Speedway is preparing for its annual National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend. The tradition filled event will take place on Friday and Saturday, September 27th and 28th and is highlighted by the running of the Binghamton Pepsi-Cola Southern Tier 100 for 358 Modifieds.

September 28th marks the 33rd running of the Binghamton Pepsi-Cola Southern Tier 100 and over the years the race has been won by some of the greatest drivers in Modified racing. It got its start way back in 1964 and ran yearly until 1983. The race was revived in 1989 when current Promoter Dan Harpell took over the track and has run yearly ever since.

The first Southern Tier 100 was won by Kenny Meahl on October 24th, 1964. The race has been won 21 times by New York drivers, eight times by Pennsylvania drivers and three times by New Jersey drivers. Of the 32 races run, 20 have been won by drivers on the list of the tracks 50 Greatest Drivers.

The race has been won 16 times by track regulars and 16 times by invaders. The tie will be broken this year when the top 358 Modified drivers converge on the famed quarter mile oval for the 33rd running.

Don Beagell has the most Southern Tier 100 wins in history with four. Chuck Akulis has won it three times. Jack Johnson, Mike Colsten, Dilly Decker and Brett Hearn have each won the race two times. One time winners include Meahl, DeForest Chalker, Dave Kneisel, Roger Beagell, Gerald Chamberlain, Stan Ploski, Sammy Beavers, Kenny Brightbill, Carl Reynolds, Alan Johnson, Jim Mahaney, Danny Johnson, Bob McCreadie, Jim Crawn, Dave Rosa, Brian Davis and Kirk Horton. The list of winners is a who’s who in Modified racing.

The National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend gets the green flag on Friday, September 27th. B&D Exhaust presents Southern Tier Championships for the Sportsman, Street Stocks, Grand American/IMCA Modifieds and Four Cylinder Stocks. Race time on Friday is 7:00 p.m.

The Sportsman will headline the show with a 50 lapper, paying $1,000 to win. The Street Stocks will compete in a STAR Series Championship race paying $750 to win. The Grand American/IMCA Modifieds will battle for a $500 winners share while the Four Cylinder Stocks compete in a STAR Series event, paying $300 to win.

The attention then turns to Saturday, September 28th with 33rd running of the Binghamton Pepsi-Cola Southern Tier 100 for 358 Modifieds. The 100 lap race will pay $2,555 to win. They will be joined by the STAR Series Northeast Pure Stock Championship. The 50 lapper will pay $500 to win. Racing begins on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

There is an entry fee for all divisions. The entry for all divisions, except the 358 Modifieds, is $30 in advance or $35 the day of the show. The Modified entry fee is $35 in advance or $50 the day of the show. The entry fee includes the drivers admission.
