This will mark the third year of the return of the Southern Tier Open, which originally ran from 1970 through 1975 at the Point and was brought back in 2000 as part of the 50th Anniversary Season. Last year 130 cars jammed the pit area, including 57 Modifieds, for the blockbuster event. With the addition of Sprint Cars making it a two day show, this has turned into a canít miss event.
There has been a lot of interest from the Sprint Car community to show they can put on a great show and bring in a strong field of cars. They will now have that opportunity as there are no scheduling conflicts and point battles are now over. It will give them the chance to go out and race without any pressure. Drivers from ESS, URC, NSA, SOS and KARS are legal to compete.
Joining them on Friday will be Sportsman and IMCA/Grand American Modifieds. The Sportsman race is open to any DIRT, Penn Can, Thunder Mt., Big Diamond or Moc-A-Tek car. Sail panels will be allowed. The IMCA/Grand American Modifieds will follow IMCA rules.
Saturdayís Southern Tier Open will follow the same guidelines as last year. Big Blocks, Big Small Blocks, Aluminum Head 358ís and Ported 358ís must weigh 2,550 pounds. Steel Head gas powered 358ís must weigh 2,450 pounds. Sail panels will be allowed.
They will be joined on Saturday by the Pure Stocks and Four Cylinder Stocks. Both of those classes will be competing in STAR Series Championship events.
