KIRKWOOD, NY - James Cornell collected his second career Five Mile Point Speedway Modified victory on Saturday night, it is wall also his second of the season. Mike Stolarcyk, III was the IMCA Modified winner with Dave Luff recording the win in the Street Stock class. Charlie Gilbert was the Pure Stock winner with Rodney Kistler earning top honors in the Legends and Don Lantz, Jr. copping Figure 8 action.
The thirty lap Modified feature event found Barry White and Cornell on the front row. At the drop of the green Cornell wasted no time as he jumped out front for the advantage. Several cautions would re-assemble the field during the early going with White maintaining second place throughout the first half of the race. J.R. Crouse was the man on the move as the race worked into the second half. On lap twenty-two Crouse worked past White and set his sights on Cornell who was still out front.
Sixth row starters Mitch Gibbs and Stewart Friesen were now working their way toward the front as the laps began to wind down. With five laps to go Cornell had a large advantage as he worked in lapped traffic. Crouse was unable to substantially close the gap as the leaders pulled away from the field. White ran the top line of the speedway as Brian Malcolm challenged for the fourth spot lap after lap. Friesen began to really get dialed in during the late stages as he worked past Gibbs and moved past White four for fourth place with only four laps to go. Out front Cornell would not be denied as he ran the extreme outside of the speedway and continued to open up his lead over Crouse. With only three to go Friesen made his way past Malcolm for third place but ran out of laps to seriously challenge the leaders. At the finish it would be Cornell picking up career win number two and win number two of the season. Crouse had another strong run to wind up in second with Friesen finishing third. Malcolm and Gibbs rounded out the top five.
Dave Luff captured top honors in the twenty lap Street Stock feature event. Luff took the lead from Joe Krisovich with only two laps remaining in the event. Krisovich would hang on for second place at the finish followed by Henry Cook Jr., Les Gillette and Jerry Tonti.
Mike Stolaryck, III recorded his fifth victory of the season in the IMCA Modified twenty lap feature event. Stolaryck took the lead from Steve Hartman on the second lap after starting in the seventh slot and never looked back. Following him across the line at the finish were Brian Rhodes, Gary Dence, Kevin Cole and Brad Weaver.
Charlie Gilbert raced to his sixth feature win of the season but it did not come easy. Gilbert took the lead from Jeremy Shaw on lap two but had to contend Doug Stack throughout the second half of the race. Stack and Gilbert put on a great show as the two battled door to door over the last few laps. At the stripe Gilbert would hang on with Stack finishing second. Jamie Batzel finished third followed by Scott Edwards and Dave Van Buren.
The Keystone Legend Cars tour was in competition on Saturday night and when it was all said and done Rodney Kistler emerged the winner. Kistler held off late race advances from Jason Rochelle for his first ever Five Mile Point Speedway win. Jim Baker, Tim Henry and Craig Rochelle completed the top five.
