KIRKWOOD, NY - Stewart Friesen continued his recent domination of Five Mile Point Speedway by winning his third consecutive Saturday night Modified feature event. Brian Puckett was the Sportsman Modified winner with Jerry Tonti capturing the victory in the Trackside Products Super Stock series event. Jamie Batzel emerged the Pure Stock winner with Brian Rhodes collecting top honors in the IMCA Modifieds. Steve Matson won the Figure 8 main with Dave Smith notching the victory in the first ever Lightning Cat main.
The thirty lap Modified feature event found Gary Griffin and Jimmy Reppert on the front row for the start. Reppert moved out front at the drop of the green but the race would quickly be slowed by a major pileup on lap two. Several cars got together causing Chris Ostrowsky to bounce off of the wall. This triggered the pileup that involved almost half of the field. Ostrowsy, Joel Batzel, Tom McGurrin, Tom Oleski, Dan Hineline and Glenn Knapp were unable to return. Oleski’s car was a total write off from the wreck with both the Knapp and McGurrin mounts sustaining heavy damage. When racing resumed Reppert continued out front as J.R. Crouse was on the move early. Crouse moved into the second spot on lap eight as Friesen was on his charge to the front.
As the race approached the halfway point Friesen was now into second place as quickly closing on Reppert for the lead. The two battled fiercely for the lead with Friesen emerging as the race leader on lap seventeen. Friesen would go on to record his third consecutive Saturday night win and third in his last four starts. Mitch Gibbs made a late race charge to record second place with Crouse, Reppert and Jim Crawn completing the top five.
Brian Puckett took the lead on lap one of the twenty lap Sportsman Modified feature and would go on to lead the entire distance. Chris Wood wound up in second place for his best career finish in the division. Shaun Walker, Eric Palmer and Eric Stephens rounded out the top five. The victory was the second for Puckett in 2006. The point chase was tightened up dramatically as current point leader Butch Klinger had a tough night.
The twenty lap Trackside Products Super Stock Series made its second stop of the season at Five Mile Point Speedway. FMP weekly regular Jerry Tonti showed the invaders the fast way around the quarter mile as he led wire to wire. Fred Crist had his best ever Five Mile Point Speedway finish by coming across the stripe in second. Carl Heater, Denny Decker and Les Gillette rounded out the top five. For Tonti, this was his third win of the season in what will be an extremely close point race in the final weeks.
Sixteenth place starter Jamie Batzel put on a show in the twenty lap Pure Stock feature by claiming the win after starting deep in the field. Batzel took the lead on lap twelve from Tom Eiklor and would go on for the victory. Eiklor wound up second followed by Scott Smith, Charlie Gilbert and Matt Spencer. For Batzel it was his first win of the season.
Jeremy Shaw made his IMCA Modified debut and didn’t waste any time leading his first laps in the feature. Shaw led the first three circuits prior to being over taken by back to back winner Brad Weaver. Brian Rhodes moved past Weaver on lap seven and went on to his first FMP victory. Weaver wound up second with Mike Stolaryck III, Mike Stoddard and Dave Rumsey rounding out the top five.
Steve Matson was the winner of the 99.1 the Whale Figure 8 feature event. Jesse Velez and Jim Watson shared the winners podium with their second and third place finishes.
The brand new Lightning Cat division held a ten lap feature event that was won by Dave Smith. Gary Kinne, Rick Krause, Dave Finch and Jeff Harrington completed the top five.
