FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY SEASON OPENER FALLS VICTIM TO SHOWERS. 50 LAP MODIFIED SPECIAL PLUS LITTLE LEAGUE NIGHT THIS SATURDAY, MAY 15TH.

KIRKWOOD, NY…Despite the tremendous efforts of track crews, Five Mile Point Speedway fell victim to persistent showers mid-way through qualifying on Saturday night. The Big Block/Small Block Modifieds will see their 50 lap "Victoria 200" All-Star race qualifier this Saturday, May 15th.

Late afternoon showers rolled into the fast clay quarter mile oval facility but track officials were determined to get the opening night program in. After a tremendous effort by the track prep crew the first heat race got underway at 7:00 p.m. When the heat races took to the speedway the surface was lightning fast and smooth.

Thirty-two Modified teams were on hand to attempt to qualify for the big 50 lap event. Modified heat number one saw Joel Batzel winning by a comfortable margin over Brian Weaver and Dan Hineline. Jeff Rudalavage drove out to a convincing win in heat number two over Matt Smith and Butch Klinger. Heat three had Don Hart, Jr., Russell Hendrickson and Dana Wagner earning re-draw positions. Defending Track Champion Dan Vauter picked up where he left off with a victory in heat number four. Bob Hamm and Rich Keehle followed him across the line.

The final preliminary heat race was on the speedway for the Pure Stocks as the rains began to fall again. This time there would be no saving the track surface as it quickly became an unmanageable task. Racing action will pick up this Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. (one half hour later than normal) with the first held-over Modified consolation event. All features will then be completed including the 50 lap "Victoria 200" All-Star race qualifier. Rain checks for both the pits and grandstand will be honored.
