JIM ALLEN SCORES FIRST CAREER MODIFIED WIN SATURDAY ON STOLARCYK CHEVROLET NIGHT AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY

KIRKWOOD, NY Jim Allen ended more than a 20 year drought by capturing his first career 358 Modified feature Saturday at Five Mile Point Speedway.  Ken Sparks, Jr., Jeff Cleveland, Roger Salai and Brian Garvey were also victorious on Stolarcyk Chevrolet Night.
Allen is in his first year of competition at the Point but has been racing since 1980.  He jumped into the lead at the drop of the green but relinquished the top spot the veteran Chuck Kennison on lap three.  Allen would charge back ahead for good on lap five. Once in front he opened a comfortable lead aboard his Reliable Van and Storage Ford powered machine over Brian Malcomb, who was running second.  Alan Rudalavage, who started 10th, moved up to third by lap seven bringing Glenn Knapp and Mitch Gibbs with him. With ten laps to go the top five consisted of Allen, Malcomb, Knapp, Rudalavage and six time winner Gibbs.  The caution flew for a tangle involving Chuck Kennison, J.R. Crouse and Mike Ricci, who was making his first Five Mile Point start in 2002.  During the caution Gibbs went pitside and came back at the tail end of the field. Allen was not to be denied as he pulled away once again and cruised to his first career feature win in commanding fashion.  He has clearly found a home at the Point.  Malcomb had another strong run to take home second over Knapp. Harry Marvin, Jr. dropped back early but came on strong at the end.  He passed Rudalavage in turn four on the last lap to finish fourth.  Sixth through tenth went to Billy Thornton, Bobby Puckett, Butch Klinger, R.C. Faigle and Rich Keehle.

Ken Sparks, Jr. absolutely dominated the Street Stock feature.  Sparks started eighth and took the lead on lap four.  The final 18 laps went caution free and Sparks took his second win of the season by a straightaway over Pat Nolan. Brett Spoor finished third ahead of Randy Rolison and Pete Sobol.  Rounding out the top ten were Jerry Tonti, Ralph Shoemaker, Jr., Jerry Liford, Don Russell and Fred Christ.

Jeff Cleveland took the lead from Charlie Gilbert on lap five of the Grand American Modified feature and ran away with his fifth feature win of the season.  Mike Stoddard was second ahead of Gilbert, Kevin Cole and Tom Vasta.

Roger Salai had a similar night as Jim Allen.  After many years of trying, he finally won an oval track feature by taking the Pure Stock main event.  Salai is a former multi time winner and track champion in the Figure 8's but had never won on the oval until Saturday night. Salai took the lead from Cory Bond on lap nine and then held off a determined Toby Sparks to claim the win.  Sparks was second ahead of Harry Cook, Darl Ellis and Mike Lartz.  Sixth through tenth went to Walt McClenon, Todd Sutliff, Jerry Whitmarsh, Randy Percival and Bob Tyriw.

The Figure 8's had the most exciting finish of the night.  Fran Reed held the lead from the outset and looked to be on his way to his first win.  Reed, however, suffered a flat tire in turn two of the last lap.  He kept going through the intersection with Richard Post and Brian Garvey pulling alongside and they entered the third turn three wide. Garvey outran them through the corner and claimed his third win of the season.  Post was second ahead of Reed, Joe Momma and Jim Palmer.

This Saturday features a full show of 358 Modifieds, Street Stocks, Grand American Modifieds, Pure Stocks and Figure 8's.  There will also be Mechanics Races at the conclusion of the show.  Race time is 6:30 p.m.

COUNTER POINTS Pennsylvania drivers took six of the top seven spots in the Modified feature with Knapp the only New Yorker in the mix. Allens brother is employed by Roush Racing. Sparks win vaulted him into the point lead in a very close battle as has been the case all year, the well run show was completed well before 10:00 p.m.
