Rain Stops Five Mile Point; Wolfe Tops Pure Stock Feature

KIRKWOOD,NY - Mother Nature stepped in midway through the Five Star Equipment program last Saturday night at Five Mile Point Speedway, putting an untimely end to the evening's activities in the early stages of the Sportsman feature. A band of showers moved over the historic quarter-mile oval at roughly 8:15 p.m., bringing along heavy rain, lightning and wind. Track officials kept the cars on the speedway for a half-hour, then reviewed the radar before pulling the plug just past 9 p.m.

When the precipitation moved in, Archie Myers III led the Sportsman headliner with two laps complete over Ricky Rutt, Rick Raisner, Brad Grim and Jeremy Holt. A spectacular incident marred the event, as fifth-running Brett Tonkin got turned around entering turn three on the second try for lap two.

In the ensuing scramble, no less than ten cars were collected, most significantly Brian Bray, who flipped wildly off the edge of the speedway before coming to rest against the outside tire wall. Bray, of Elmhurst, Pa., climbed from his machine uninjured. Taking the Sportsman heat victories earlier in the night were Rick Raisner, Brett Tonkin and Brad Grim.

Shane Wolfe of Susquehanna, Pa., scored his fourth Pure Stock win of the season at FMP in a time-shortened 16-lap feature. Wolfe started the event third, grabbed the lead on the first lap and fought off a hard-charging Jeremy Shaw to take the win.

The race was cut short at the 30 minute mark, a rule imposed by FMP management for all the support divisions in 2004. When Jerry Whitmarsh slid off the track on lap 16 in turn three, the yellow and checkered were waived simultaneously. Shaw, Art Darling Jr., Chris Wood and Charlie Gilbert rounded out the top five.

Winning the heat races for the 26 Modifieds in attendance were Glenn Knapp, Bobby Puckett and Gary Griffin. The consolation went to Ed Strada Jr. Twenty Street Stock competitors signed in with handicapper Grant Buck. Brett Spoor, Les Gillette and Bill Trego were the heat victors. The UMP Modified division had the night off.

The remainder of the Sportsman feature, along with the Street Stock and Modified hold over races will be run prior to the July 24 program, with an early starting time of 6 p.m. in effect to accommodate the extra events. A full show of Modifieds, Sportsman, UMP Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and Figure Eights will fill out the busy card.

It will be CDL Truckers Night presented by Maine's Tractor Trailer Driving School, with all Class A license holders admitted free into the grandstands. Grandstand admission for those holding rain checks from Saturday's rain-shortened show will be $10. Regular adult admission (for those without rain checks) will be $12.
